In clinical studies, the efficacy and safety of special herbal extracts of the plant Rheum rhaponticum L, called ERR 731, has been confirmed for menopausal symptoms, especially for sunburn reduction.

Herbal research and the use of herbal therapy are much more accepted in Europe than in the United States. In Germany, research on herbal remedies for alleviation of menopausal symptoms has been in progress since 1940.

German health workers have used special extracts of Siberian rhubarb (called ERR 731) to alleviate the symptoms of menopause since 1993.

What is ERR 731?

Several clinical trials to alleviate menopausal symptoms demonstrate the benefits and safety of ERR 731. The extract contains no estrogen.

It is a phytochemical consisting of phytoestrogens and having a very mild estrogenic activity in the range of 1/1000 of estrogen. The phytoestrogens extracted from Siberian rhubarb of ERr 731 are plant specific.

The plant estrogen of Siberian Loubardian roots belongs to a class called hydroxystilbene. These phytoestrogens are chemically different from other classes of phytoestrogens such as those found in soy, red clover, flax, and hops.

Hydroxystilbene phytoestrogens in this extract are similar in structure to resveratrol and resveratrol has received much approval for its health benefits.

In some clinical studies, beneficial ERr 731 extract has been reported for relief of menopausal symptoms.

Siberian radish root extract (ERr 731) clinical study:

In this study of 109 women around 109 menopause, 54 women were given Siberian Yellow Rhin Extract (ERr 731) and 55 women received placebo. (3, 5) In the group of women receiving ERR 731, significant reduction of 11 symptoms associated with menopause was observed.

Women who ingested Siberian Rhizoma extract experienced a significant reduction in severity and number of severe violence by 4 weeks.

At the end of 12 weeks, women taking Siberian · rhubarb root extracts had 11 common menopausal disorders

The above studies are described in Herger, et al. According to the medical journal of Menopause (2006), the root extract of Siberian rhubarb reduced the blink of 72% in just 12 weeks.

Based on this and the results of three additional clinical trials of rhubarb root extract, average women reported 11 hot flashes per day after 12 weeks.

Safety of Siberian rhubarb root extract

Studies of Siberian · rhubarb extract showed it to be safe and nontoxic. In clinical trials in two clinical trials, no adverse effects were observed when dogs and rats were fed a very high dose of extract (14,000 × weight adjusted recommended dose for humans).

Four different clinical studies observed the benefits of ERR 731 extract and its safety. These clinical studies showed that ERR 731 extract is well tolerated up to 2 years by over 400 women.

Women of these studies had no side effects from extracts. They had no associated endometrial biopsy (internal biopsy of the uterus), no bleeding, no change in body weight, changes in blood pressure or pulse rate, or any relevant changes in clinical examination.
