Source
Rhizomes (rhizomes) of Hydrastis canadensis are commonly used to make dosage forms. The main chemical components are alkaloid hydracinin and berberine. There are also hydrastatinine, canazine, berberastine, cannarine, canadarine, chlorogenic acid, carbohydrates, fatty acids, volatile oils, resins, and mechonins.
Behavior
Goldenseal is claimed to have anti-hemorrhagic, anti-inflammatory, astringent, laxative and oxytocid. Pharmacological properties are due to berberine and hydracin, scientific research is usually focused on these alkaloids, not the herbs themselves.
The alkaloid component of goldenseal has been reported to suppress the muscle contraction of rodent smooth muscle, while others show the effect of oxytosis. Goldenseal extract reduces hyperphagia and hyperacidity associated with murine streptozocin induced diabetes.
Berberine reduces the anticoagulant effect of heparin in laboratory tests of heparinized animals and humans, acts as a cardiac activator in animals (at low doses), increases coronary perfusion, and increases cardiac activity ( At high doses). For berberine in animal and laboratory models antipyretic activity (higher than aspirin) and anthelminthics, antihistamines, antibacterials, antimuscarinics, antitumor agents, and antihypertensive effects have been reported.
Hydrostitynin causes vasoconstriction and may cause significant changes in blood pressure.
Reported use
Golden sense claims include use against anorexia, cancer, conjunctivitis, dysmenorrhea, eczema, gastritis, gastrointestinal disease, oral ulcers, otorrhea, peptic ulcers, postpartum hemorrhage, pruritus, tinnitus, and tuberculosis, Anti-inflammatory agent, laxative, and disinfectant for wounds. There are few clinical trial data available, if any, to support these claims.
Goldenseal was found to be less effective than ergot alkaloid when used for postpartum bleeding in humans. Berberine has been shown to shorten the duration of acute Vibrio cholera diarrhea and diarrhea caused by Giardia, Salmonella, and several species of Shigella and several enterococci. Clinical trials of patients with cirrhosis showed that berberine could improve abnormalities in several laboratories and improve the secretion and function of bile.
Dosage
Dried rhizome: 0.5 ~ 1 g PO tid
Ethanol and water extract: 250 mg PO tid
Side effect
CNS: CNS depression, paralysis (high dose), paresthesia, seizures.
CV: no contraction, bradycardia, heart block.
EENT: Oral ulcers.
GI: abdominal cramps and pain, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting.
Respiratory: respiratory depression (at high doses).
Skin: contact dermatitis.
Interaction
Anticoagulant: The beneficial effects of therapeutic anticoagulant can be offset. Avoid goldenseal dosing.
Antihypertensive medications: Goldenseal or an extract thereof may interfere with the antihypertensive effect or increase the antihypertensive effect. Please do not use together.
Beta blockers, calcium channel blockers, digoxin: These drugs may increase or interfere with cardiac action. Please do not use together.
Central nervous system depressant (alcohol benzodiazepine): It may enhance the sedative effect. Avoid goldenseal dosing.
Contraindications and precautionary measures
Goldenseal is contraindicated in patients with CV disease, especially arrhythmia, heart failure, or hypertension, and pregnant.
Special Considerations
Alert death may result from taking a large alkaloid. Symptoms of overdose include depression, exaggerated reflexes, gastrointestinal disorders, nervousness, and seizures that progress to respiratory paralysis and CV decay.
We monitor abnormal symptoms.
Monitor the signs of vitamin B deficiency (horny stomatitis, keratosis, glossitis, infertility, ascorbic anemia, peripheral neuropathy, seborrheic dermatitis, seizures).
Be careful to avoid dangerous activities until the effect of CNS becomes apparent.
Due to the possibility of causing toxicity, instruct the patient not to take gold tolerance.
Interested point
It has been reported that the chronic use of gold arsenic decreases the absorption of vitamin B, thereby promoting its deficiency.
Resistance to herbal pharmacological action is thought to develop after chronic use in just a few weeks.
Berberine is also a component of melon (Berberis vulgaris).
Goldenseal extracts were components of sterile washes for many years without supporting evidence of their inclusion. Also extracts or their ingredients are listed in the National Pharmacopoeia of several countries.
Goldenseal is improperly used to mask the emergence of illicit drugs in drug screening of human and racehorse urine. This information is incorrect and comes from an imaginary literary work that depicts that plants help to hide opioid intake.
Goldenseal is used as a dye. Rhizomes are bright yellow and are popular for dyeing many fabrics and materials.
According to a survey within the emergency department of New York City, gold and silver tea is included among the three most commonly quoted medicinal herbs consumed by patients.
Commentary
Pharmacological effects of gold amphibole have not been fully studied. Since toxicity risks appear excessively in this plant, some advocacy texts do not support use against failures. Goldenseal and its alkaloids have promising pharmacological properties. Before proceeding with human studies, additional comprehensive and controlled studies in animals are needed.
